Artist's Description

Also referred to as Pirate's Alley, Pirate Alley travels from Chartres Street at Jackson to Royal Street. No one really knows why people started calling Orleans Alley (former name) Pirate Alley, but the name was changed in the 1964 to it's current name Pirate Alley because people already called it that.
On the left side of Pirate Alley is Saint Louis Cathedral, while on the other side is the old Spanish Governor's Mansion (Cabildo) which was also the location of the Spanish Dungeon.
Legend has it that Pirate Alley got it's name because pirates use to gather there....between a church and a dungeon. Now, if I were a pirate I doubt I would hang out there.
